Netflix is celebrating the season of love with the newest and refreshing pair in the tinsel town, Meenakshi and Sunderashwar. Played by Sanya Malhotra and Abhimanyu Dassani, Meenakshi Sundareshwar explores the love story of newlyweds and their relatable journey in finding romance, set in the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu - Madurai.
A 90-second teaser was released a couple of days back to introduce the audiences to the lead characters Meenakshi and Sundar, which was loved by the audiences. However, it also received some criticism from a few people saying that it was not an accurate representation of Tamilians and their culture. The makers on their part have maintained that it was never their intention to misrepresent Tamilians on the screen and that the film was devoid of any stereotypes that are associated with South Indians and intend to represent Madurai with all its rich culture and tradition that it is known for. Sticking to the story, the makers have shown the world from the point of view of their characters. Shot in Madurai, the film tries to be as accurate as possible when it comes to narrating the heartfelt story.
The recent promotional content from the film has only made it evident that the film promises to be much more.
An elaborate trailer of Meenakshi Sundareshwar was dropped on Thursday, taking us deeper into the world of Meenakshi and Sundar. It takes us into the life of two ambitious individuals Meenakshi and Sundar who are deeply in love but are separated geographically post marriage as they set out to achieve their professional dreams. They become each other’s support as they try to figure out a long-distance relationship as a newly married couple.
While India is arguably the most diverse country in the world, showing every aspect in a two-hour film is near to impossible, but the makers have managed to capture the beauty of Madurai with the colourful Gopurams, the traditional attires, and the Kuthu music and dance keeping the story in focus.
While the Hindi film industry is not particularly known for accurate presentation of South India in mainstream Hindi films, with Meenakshi Sundareshwar, the makers have attempted to focus on a refreshing love story of a young married couple and their struggles while also highlighting the beautiful temple town of Madurai. Moving away from the age-old cliches of funny accents, random Aiyyos and enna rascalas, the film promises to take us through a relatable journey of love, an emotion that knows no geographical boundaries.
Sanya Malhotra who essays Meenakshi is known to effortlessly slip into any role that she is given. As for Abhimanyu Dassani, he made a lasting impression with his debut film Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota and will unveil his romantic side with his second outing. Directed by debutant Vivek Soni, the film is written by Aarsh Vora and Vivek Soni. The film will be released on November 5 on Netflix.
