Shoojit Sircar helmed Sardar Udham has been doing very well among the audience and has even got critical acclamation for its portrayal of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. However, many of the people expressed their displeasure as the film isn't selected for India’s official entry for the 94th Academy Awards. But the film’s director, Shoojit Sircar feels the jury’s decision to not select the film is “very subjective”.
Recently while interacting with the media Sircar said that it is a personal opinion and very subjective and has no comment on that. He says that he respects the jury and their decision. He also says that he is glad that it was chosen till some point and is happy going by the jury's decision.
While Indraadip Dasgupta, one of the jury members also cited the reason behind the film not being sent for the Oscars. While speaking to a tabloid, he says that Sardar Uddam portrays our hatred towards the British”. He also gave the length of the movie as one of the reasons for it losing out to Tamil drama Koozhangal (Pebbles) which has been announced as India’s official entry for the Oscars this year. He also feels that in this era of globalisation, it is not fair to hold on to this hatred
Sardar Udham is based on the Indian revolutionary Sardar Udham Singh who assassinated Michael O’Dwyer, the lieutenant governor of Punjab at the time of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar. The film stars Vicky Kaushal in the titular role.
