EXCLUSIVE: “I don't want to sing songs that have no meaning”- Darshan Raval Darshan Raval is an Indian singer, composer, and lyricist. He is well known for film songs like ‘Chogada’, ‘Kamariya’, ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Ais Laga’ among others. His contribution in boosting the independent music scene in Indian has been massive. He has independent tracks like ‘Tera Zikr’, ‘Ye Baarish’, ‘Tu Mileya’, ‘Asal Mein’, ‘Ek Tarfa’, ‘Judaiyaan’ among several others to his credit. He recently released yet another song titled 'Duniya Chhor Doon', a romantic track that he dedicates to his fans who call themselves the Blue Family. After the release of the song, Darshan spoke to Bollywood Hungama about his latest release, the boost of independent music, and his plans for 2022. The song has been receiving a lot of love from the audience and was trending on the day of the release. Talking about the love the song has been receiving, Darshan said, “It's audio, so people have the opportunity to love the song everywhere on every platform. Right now there is no video, but a video might come in the near future. But right now there is none because I want people to focus on what is written and what is sung." From engaging in sad songs in 2020, Darshan opted for happy songs for 2021. “Last year I did a lot of sad songs, 'Asal Mein',' Tum Nahi Ho Mere', 'Ek Tarfa', and then an entire album called 'Judaiyaan'. The entire year I did sad songs. Then I promised all the fans that it was too much heartbreak now and for the next year, 2021, we are going to do happy songs. So I started with ‘Rabba Mehr Kari’ which was also a dedication to all the fans. Then ‘Jannat Ve’ is a pure dedication to the Blue Family. Again ‘Duniya Chhor Doon’ is a very beautiful and loving romantic number. There is no sadness in it. It speaks about what we do and what all we can do to express our love. I am singing it but it feels like all my fans singing it for me. My melody is inspired by the emotions and the love expressed by my fans. They are the reason we could make this song." Talking about what went behind making this song, Darshan said, "My process of songs is very long. I worked on this song for 4-5 months. Then there are times when I make a song and keep it aside because you are not able to complete the song. Even for ‘Duniya Chhor Doon’, I made the first half of the song, and then I took a break of 2-3 months and then created the second half of the song. Sometimes you create something and are not able to complete it. So this was one of the songs. Eventually, every song has its destiny and you can complete it only when it is meant to be completed." Darshan has a humongous fan following and the love poured on his work is proof enough. While the love and appreciation are motivating, he is also unhinged by the pressure that it brings. “My focus is to make good music. Pressure is there to make something better than what you have created before. There is constant pressure, but it is a good pressure on me. Ten -Fifteen years from now when I look back I should have great songs. The songs should be such that it impacts people’s life.” "A couple when they are getting married and they come to tell me that because of you we have fallen in love. They tell me that they fell in love listening to my song. It’s a great thing that my songs are having an impact. I want to always have that. I don't want to sing songs that have no meaning," he added. While Darshan has been singing for films, his contribution to the independent space has been massive. Talking about the freedom it offers, he said, “In independent music, you are not singing for any actor. The video is not more important than the song. In a movie, the script is very important, the actor is very important. And everybody wants something different, the director would want something, the composer would have made something and the singer has to deliver that. That is a different process and I enjoy that. You are giving your voice to a particular situation or a particular actor. That's a great feeling as well but independent music is something heart to heart and what I feel. It’s like my diary. I write what I feel and release it. There is no one telling me what and how to do something. I have freedom.” "Earlier when Mohit Chauhan, Kailash Kher would release Independent music people would listen to them; there was an Indie-pop scene. Then for 10 years it completely disappeared and people forgot about independent music. Now it’s come back again and it is very important for independent artists in India to do great music so people will remember and it will become easier for future singers," he added. Darshan also aspires to make a song that everybody loves. Sharing his plans for 2022, he reveals, "I have been planning to try and incorporate different kinds of sounds for next year. 2020 was all sad songs, 2021 was love songs and in 2022 I am experimenting not with melody but with sounds, sounds which we have never used till now. I am going to play around with those sounds. So to reach on a global level we will have to crack that sound that is happening outside India. I want to make a song that works in India and one that works for the entire world."
