“There’s nothing he can’t pull it off. He does it first and everyone just follows,” says Nitasha Gaurav who has been styling Ranveer Singh for over eight years. The actor will complete a decade in the industry in December this year. His zany sense of style never goes unnoticed. The paparazzi wait for his arrival at the red carpets, his looks get decoded in tabloids and even his airport fashion statements become the most talked about topics.
Over the years, the actor has been unapologetic when it comes to his fashion. But, where does this vivid sense of style come from? “He just likes to wear what he feels comfortable and happy in,” adds Nitasha, who says that she never has had a specific process of working on looks for him. It’s intuitive and the work camaraderie is so good that she brings certain types of styles to the table and whatever Ranveer likes, he wears and adapts the nature of the look.
Nitasha Gaurav has a Masters Degree in Textiles & Clothing and has also studied at London College of Fashion and Fashion Institute of Technology, New York. After this, she taught at NIFT, New Delhi before working as Fashion Editor with Femina magazine. Subsequent to that she began working as an independent celebrity stylist. Recalling her first shoot with Ranveer, she says it was for Filmfare magazine, where they were working on the “Bandra Boy” feature. “I remember meeting him for the shoot really early in the morning for this photo story on how he was the Bandra Boy. We shot at every hot spot in Bandra that was meaningful to him.”
This shoot was very well received and Ranveer called Nitasha for another shoot and one thing led to another. Since then, they have become a dynamic duo that brings the most creative looks to the spotlight, collaborating both with top of the line brands and designers as well as upcoming and lesser-known designers.
When asked what had been the most stand-out moment for her, Nitasha says, “Among the recent looks, I have to say the red-sash tweed Moschino look for IIFA 2020 and the crimson Gucci look for Vogue Women of the year awards stand out. While it’s true that many celebrities are awaited at the red carpets but when Ranveer Singh arrives, the whole vibe changes. Everyone wants to see what he is wearing.”
It is true. The dramatic ensemble for IIFA Awards 2019 was very regal and out of the box look. He made heads turn with his suit, lace-up boots, a sceptre, all topped off with an irreverent ponytail. The same goes for the red suit with a military twist that not many could pull off, which he wore at Vogue Women Of The Year Awards. This was a head to toe red look and accentuated with a beret, retro sunglasses, and slip-on shoes.

“On an earlier occasion, for one of the Filmfare Awards, I did a very unique look where the whole suit was made of fabric printed with the film posters. Another time it was an Arjun Saluja skirt & slim pants with blazer look. He had shined in both as only he can!’ Nitasha adds. ” I spend a lot of time researching designers and finding unique looks for him. For trials, I bring in anything from 10-15 full looks for him and whichever appeals to him most, he wears. It’s that simple a process for us. Even his airport looks get written about because this is his style. He loves colours and vibrant looks. This is who he is.”
From skirts to pyjama sets to mismatched clothing, he has done it all. Some have even called his style - gender fluid. “He doesn’t wear something thinking ‘what will people think?’ He has no inhibitions like that. He has done some stop-and-stare looks but he has also opted for some of the most elegant classic styles. He broke the norm of how a hero should dress up.”

Since trends change so often, Nitasha says, “Every season there are new trends. But Ranveer is not about trends, he’s about individualistic style. Like he wore metallic hi-shine foil box coat from the brand Berthold that really struck a chord. Or the subtly dramatic look for Filmfare Awards 2020 where he wore black ensemble from London-based designer Kaushik Velendra’s Autumn/Winter 2020 collection. We work with all kinds of designers – some of them are well-known, some are lesser-known – but that’s what helps to create such distinctive looks.” Consider it a power move – highlighting the lesser-known designers and adding more creativity to Ranveer’s looks.
Interestingly, Nitasha works with very limited people. “I have at the max 4-5 people in the team. I like to focus on work, not in managing people.” In this coronavirus pandemic, everyone is at home and waiting to get back to work. Nitasha says that she too is yet to resume work but is looking forward to it. “Though things will be different, I am looking forward to getting back to work. We will have to be safe and keep the guidelines in place.”
Bright colours, bold prints and patterns, silhouettes, neon and everything else – Ranveer Singh is not here to be mundane with his looks. His distinct sense of style can’t be called bizarre because it is liberating to see a mainstream Hindi film hero to push boundaries.
