The film is a remake of Telugu blockbuster Arjun Reddy which starred Vijay Devarakonda. The Hindi adaptation stars Kiara Advani opposite Shahid Kapoor. While the original was praised for the performances, it was also highly criticized for the lead character being toxic, manipulating and slapping his girlfriend and bullying people. When Shahid Kapoor was asked about how flawed the character of Arjun aka Kabir Singh was, he gave the example of Vijay Raaz from Gully Boy who slapped his wife in the film. He said that nobody asked him this kind of question. Then, how come a mainstream Hindi actor is questioned for showcasing grey shade in his character. The actor said that not all things are needed to be justified. He said that one man's meat is another man's poison. The actor added that films have to be a reflection of life and life is complex. Shahid Kapoor further said that there are no straight lines. He said that it was like when Al Pacino did Scarface, or his father Pankaj Kapur did Maqbool or Kamal Haasan starred in Nayakan. He said that these actors have given some of the finest performances with these characters in their careers. Shahid further said that the audiences are adults who have the power of discretion. They understand what is right and wrong. Shahid further said that when he watched Arjun Reddy, he said that a part of him could relate to the character, the imperfections and misgivings. He could see some moments of his life where he could relate. The actor said that it was cathartic for him to watch that on screen. It helped him deal with his own issues which might have been present at some level. Shahid said that the films are all about helping one deal with the things. He said that the film has to resonate with the audience as long as they are not giving out the wrong message. He said that Arjun was a nice guy. He could not control his emotions but was good at heart. Kabir Singh, helmed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, is slated for June 21, 2019 release.
