It had too many twists and turns. Several films that were not expected to work or were to be average grossers became huge hits. On the other hand, the extremely big budgeted films bit the dust, sending shockwaves. In this Bollywood Hungama Special Feature, we take a look at ten interesting trends of the ticket window in 2018: 1. Defeat of the Khans All three Khans – Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan – had a release and all these film’s budgets were sky-high. Shockingly, all the films flopped big time. Salman’s Race 3 seemed shaky from the trailers and the star cast. Yet, it opened strongly but soon crashed when the word of mouth spread. Aamir Khan-starrer Thugs Of Hindostan meanwhile was the biggest shocker of the year. After all, Aamir is known to give qualitative content and enjoys immense trust among the audiences. Even the films with little logic like Dhoom 3 were great entertainers because of which they sustained. But Thugs Of Hindostan was devoid of logic and even humour and entertainment. It crashed badly after a historic first day. Meanwhile, Zero, starring Shah Rukh Khan, was the worst performer because it never opened big. And then the response came in that it’s bad. The film is currently struggling to cross the Rs. 100 crore mark. 2. Debacle of Zero and Thugs makes Race 3 collections seem respectable Despite the negative response and panning on social media, Race 3 actually had a decent run. This is especially when one compares it to Thugs Of Hindostan and Zero. The first four days of its release was the festive period and hence, collections were going to big. But even after festive period, the film didn’t crash out as badly as feared and even in Week 2; it remained steady at lower levels. Thugs Of Hindostan on the other hand crashed out during the festive weekend itself. After collecting Rs. 52.25 crore on Day 1, its eventual lifetime collections totalled Rs. 151.19 crore only! As for Zero, it had an opening of Rs. 20.14 crore and will collect around Rs. 98-100 crore in total. This trend speaks volumes of the superstardom of Salman Khan! 3. Race 3 more profitable than Badhaai Ho and here's why Race 3 led to losses for some people in the chain while the Ayushmann Khurrana starrer Badhaai Ho, made on a limited budget, became the surprise super hit, earning Rs. 137.59 crore. But when compared, Race 3 actually accumulated more money for its producers as it made its maximum collection in the first 2 weeks, when producers get more share than multiplexes. Badhaai Ho meanwhile earned Rs. 94.55 crore in the first 2 weeks and the balance was achieved in the subsequent weeks. And from that amount, the makers got a lesser share. 4. After numerous flops, Ranbir Kapoor surprisingly delivers highest grosser of the Year Ranbir Kapoor has had a huge fan following but since many years; he has had a tough time. Several of his films flopped with only Ae Dil Hai Mushkil being a somewhat decent performer. But this year, he shocked one and all as his much awaited film Sanju emerged as a blockbuster. It earned a mind-boggling Rs. 342.53 crore and is the only film this year to cross the Rs. 300 crore mark. What’s more, it is the even the highest grosser of the year and the first non-Khan film in 12 years to achieve this feat! The last time this happened was in 2006 when Dhoom 2 was the year’s biggest hit. 5. New actors setting new benchmarks Not just Ranbir Kapoor, but several other actors emerged as potential superstars of tomorrow as many films did more than expected. Ranveer Singh-Shahid Kapoor-Deepika Padukone starrer Padmaavat earned close to Rs. 300 crore despite not releasing in four major states. Apart from these actors and Ranbir Kapoor, actors like Kartik Aaryan, Tiger Shroff, Alia Bhatt, Rajkummar Rao and Ayushmann Khurrana gave some huge hits, most of which even earned Rs. 100 crore. And these films were not expected to do so well in the first place! 6. Extreme collections of films Raazi was the so-called women-centric film and hence was expected to maybe earn Rs. 60-70 crore. But trade and industry was surprised when it managed to reach till Rs. 123.84 crore mark. Stree, starring Shraddha Kapoor and ‘art cinema’ hero Rajkummar Rao also surprised by collecting Rs. 129.90 crore. Tiger Shroff meanwhile made it clear again that he’s here to rule as Baaghi 2 went on to become a blockbuster, crossing the Rs. 160 crore mark. Ayushmann Khurrana was hailed as the most victorious as he had 2 releases in October and both were successful. Andhadhun seemed like a niche multiplex film and yet collected Rs. 74.58 crore. Badhaai Ho looked like a winner from the trailer but yet, it was a pleasant surprise when it collected Rs. 137.59 crore. Lastly, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety netted Rs. 108.95 crore, spreading cheer and smiles everywhere. This showed that when audiences really liked a film, it can go anywhere. And when the audiences didn’t, then nothing can stop it from becoming a huge flop. The debacles of Race 3, Thugs Of Hindostan and Zero proved it. Films like Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se, Namaste England and Helicopter Eela couldn’t even reach the Rs. 10 crore mark despite having popular names with the first two being parts of popular franchises. 7. Slightly underwhelming year for Varun Dhawan Varun Dhawan is considered a bona fide superstar of tomorrow and rightfully so. But this year has not been huge for him. His first film, October, was offbeat and niche but considering the costs, it had to do slightly more than what it eventually collected – Rs. 39.06 crore. With Sui Dhaaga, expectations were huge and it turned out to be a ‘Hit’ for its makers. But one surely expected this lovely film to cross the Rs. 100 or Rs. 90 crore mark at least and not halt at Rs. 79.02 crore. 8. Rise of John Abraham John Abraham delivered underperformers in the form of Rocky Handsome, Dishoom and Force 2 in 2016. He had no release in 2017. This year he had two releases and both surpassed expectations. Parmanu released all of a sudden with little promotion. But the word of mouth was so positive that it collected Rs. 65.89 crore. His massy action film, Satyameva Jayate, opened with a bang at Rs. 19.50 crore and eventually earned Rs. 80.50 crore at the box office. The actor thus began to be seen in a new light this year and no wonder now he has so many releases lined up! 9. Directors finally get their due The actors take major credit for the success of their films. But 2018 was a period when even directors were recognized for their good work. Directors with fan following like Rajkumar Hirani, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Rohit Shetty obviously got talked about for the super success of Sanju, Padmaavat and Simmba respectively. But even lesser known ones like Luv Ranjan (Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety), Raj Kumar Gupta (Raid), Shoojit Sircar (October), Milap Zaveri (Satyameva Jayate), Meghna Gulzar (Raazi), Sriram Raghavan (Andhadhun) and Amit Sharma (Badhaai Ho) got recognized and were feted. 10. Festive period becomes even more lucrative 2018 showed the films releasing on holidays can do very, very well, even when content is not that great or average. Thugs Of Hindostan got some sort of respectable collections as it released post-Diwali holiday and managed to collect Rs. 50 crore on the first day. If it had released on a non-holiday, it would have been a bigger disaster. Satyameva Jayate also got the advantage as it released on Independence Day. Besides the synergy and the matching temperament, most such teams are about amazing variety within their collaborations, or about creating a joint brand, like with the Ajay-Rohit combo. Here are some more such memorable collaborations. Aditya & Yash Chopra-Shah Rukh Khan As a director, Aditya Chopra worked with Shah Rukh Khan in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, about which nothing needs to be said. They next came up with Mohabbatein and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. SRK acted in four more productions of the filmmaker, of which the last, Fan, was a washout. But Veer-Zaara and Jab Tak Hai Jaan (which were both written by Aditya) and Chak De! India worked too. However, devoid of SRK, Aditya could not make the grade with Befikre. His father Yash Chopra also directed Darr, Dil To Pagal Hai, Veer-Zaara and Jab Tak Hai Jaan with the actor, besides producing or presenting all other films except Fan. When SRK replaced Aamir Khan in Darr, little did any of them know that they were going to be partners for so long! Ali Abbas Zafar-Salman Khan When Ali Abbas Zafar, who had directed two hits for YRF, was assigned Sultan, no one knew how big it would be. But that huge success led to a bonus assignment—the super-hit Tiger Zinda Hai and now Ali has been chosen to helm Salman Khan’s prestigious home production, Bharat. The sky is expected from this combo now, as they are the only other team besides Rajkuamr Hirani-Aamir Khan to have two films in the 300 crore club! Karan Johar-Shah Rukh Khan If Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… are evergreen, Karan’s next two films with SRK, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and My Name Is Khan did well only overseas, with the last-mentioned being critically acclaimed. In his last directorial, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, SRK made a forgettable cameo, but the association has gone beyond—Karan has co-produced both Kaal and Dear Zindagi with SRK, and another film that was a success here and a big hit overseas was the Karan-written co-production Kal Ho Naa Ho. Neeraj Pandey-Akshay Kumar Whenever they worked together, Neeraj Pandey was a hit machine, whether he directed Akshay Kumar (Special 26, Baby) or produced his films (Rustom, Toilet—Ek Prem Katha). Even his production with Akshay in a cameo, Naam Shabana, got modest returns. But the two have yet to come back together after Crack did not work out. Rakesh Roshan-Hrithik Roshan The father has always directed successful films with his son, the first three being blockbusters (Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai, Koi…Mil Gaya, Krrish). Krrish 3 did average business, and Kaabil, Kites and Krrazy 4 did not match up. Maybe the spark will be back in Krrish 4 and Krrish 5, which are reportedly being planned simultaneously—with father Roshan at the helm. Sanjay Bhansali-Ranveer Singh-Deepika Padukone Here is a filmmaker who believes both in epics and a lead pair. Two musical extravaganzas (Goliyon Ki RasLila—RamLila and Bajirao Mastani) were followed by the biggest hit, the thriller Padmaavat. The locales changed each time, so did the timeframes, but the muses remained, along with the fact that none of the three saw the lovers unite on reel! Sooraj R. Barjatya-Salman Khan Despite the not-so-exciting faring of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, this combination always means something wholesome and family-oriented, and buzz about another new film together is heard again and again. And why not? They have delivered the two biggest hits of two successive decades—the 1980s (Maine Pyar Kiya, his debut lead film) and 1990s (Hum Aapke Hain Koun!...). Meanwhile, more kids joined the bandwagon as Neha Dhupia gave birth to Mehr, within six months of her marriage. Neil Nitin Mukesh became proud parents of Nurvi. Shahid Kapoor and Mira Rajput’s daughter Misha got a baby brother in the form of Zain. Sunny Leone and Daniel Weber meanwhile adopted two more children – the very cute boys Asher and Noah. On the other hand, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), popularly known as Censor Board, remained in the news all year long mostly for the wrong reasons. Pahlaj Nihalani challenged the CBFC after they meted unfair treatment to his Govinda starrer Rangeela Raja. D – Daisy Shah and Disha Patani These two beauties made it to the headlines. Daisy Shah became the most talked about actor in the multi-starrer Race 3 after her dialogue ‘None of your business’ went viral and became a catchphrase. Disha Patani meanwhile gave a super-hit in the form of Baaghi 2. But she got trolled when she posted a picture on Diwali, wearing a sports bra with Diwali lehenga, by allegedly enhancing her assets. After the criticism, she re-uploaded her pic, this time without Photoshop. E – Emergence of digital platforms Netflix and Amazon Prime become quite big, with the original series like Sacred Games, Breathe and Mirzapur getting lot of viewership. G – Ginni Chatrath Funny man Kapil Sharma finally got hitched to Ginni Chatrath and hopefully this will mark a new chapter in the former’s life who has had bit of a rocky 2017 and 2018. Earlier this year, he had an abusive spat with a journalist on the phone. His show too started and ended abruptly. It has now restarted and it remains how it fares in 2019. H – Hare This animal in Andhadhun was the biggest mystery of the Ayushmann Khurrana starrer. It sprung up multiple theories as to what exactly was the climax of this well-made and one of the most brilliant films of 2018 I – Ishaan, Janhvi, Sara These star kids finally had their debuts and all three of them did a good job. J – Jail It was jail time for Prernaa Arora, who made a lot of noise this year, for the wrong reasons. After her controversial exit from Parmanu – The Story Of Pokhran, Kedarnath, Batti Gul Meter Chalu and Fanney Khan, she was arrested for duping Vashu Bhagnani of crores of rupees. Others who were imprisoned were Rajpal Yadav for Rs 5 crore recovery suit, Mika Singh for alleged molestation in Dubai and Armaan Kohli for alleged assault and stocking of imported alcoholic bottles. K – Kartik Aaryan This chap was doing a fine job since years but commercial success combined with extreme popularity eluded him. This year proved to be lucky as his comic caper Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety became one of the best films of the year and also crossed the Rs. 100 crore mark. No wonder that the actor became a hot property in no time. L – Lake Como The picturesque venue in Italy where the most exciting pair of Bollywood, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, got married M – #MeToo The much-needed movement that stormed Hollywood last year finally knocked on the Bollywood doors and created madness. Tanushree Dutta ignited the fire by talking about a ten-year-old case against Nana Patekar. The #MeToo fire then engulfed Alok Nath, Sajid Khan, Vikas Bahl, Kailash Kher, Rajat Kapoor etc N – Nick Jonas This hot import from the West won the heart of our ‘Desi Girl’ Priyanka Chopra. In no time, both got married and proved to the world that a woman marrying a guy younger to her by almost ten years is no big deal. O – Outlandish costumes of Ranveer Singh This talented actor continued to make headline thanks to his costumes. But we love the way he carries it with ease. P – Padmaavat 2018 started on a rocky note as the problems associated with Padmaavat didn’t find a logical conclusion. The film didn’t get a release in four major states. Yet, it became a huge grosser and director Sanjay Leela Bhansali had the last laugh. Q – Quality content gets accepted This year proved that more than stars and glitz-n-glamour, the content was of paramount importance. A much needed change! R – Ranbir Kapoor He had proved his acting worth but in terms of box office, he was not able to raise much over the last few years. But in 2018, he surprised one and all as the Sanjay Dutt biopic, Sanju, became a Rs. 300 crore grosser. What’s more, it’s also the biggest hit of the year! S – Sridevi The beautiful and talented diva left for heavenly abode all of a sudden in February in Dubai, saddening industry and crores of viewers. T – Thugs Of Hindostan An Aamir Khan film is nothing short of an event. But this Diwali release was without any fizz or fireworks. The manner in which it crashed each day was scary. U – Unusual pairings Besides Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, Arjun Kapoor and Malika Arora finally started making their relationship official. The hottie Harshvardhan Rane surprised fans by dating Kim Sharma. Farhan Akhtar meanwhile found love in Shibani Dandekar. Arjun Rampal and Arbaaz Khan also moved on in their lives by going out with Gabriella Demetriades and Giorgia Andriani. V – Veere Di Wedding This ‘lady-oriented’ film made a lot of noise pre-release. Thankfully, it met lot of expectations and was a big hit, proving sceptics wrong that an urban, adult female-centric film can’t work. W – Wink of Priya Varrier Her 26 second clip from her debut film spread like wild fire all over, making her an instant overnight celebrity. X – e(x)treme collections of films Films like Padmaavat, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Baaghi 2, Raazi, Stree, Badhaai Ho, AndhaDhun etc collected much more than what was expected. Y – Yash, Rajinikanth – South heroes who rocked 2018 After Baahubali’s super success, two more South films released in Hindi versions in a huge way. And both of them – the Rajinikanth-starrer 2.0 and Yash-starrer KGF: Chapter 1 did very well commercially. Z – Zero This film was quite true to its name as it was bizarre and silly making many wonder how it got approved in the first place! For the first time ever, the Kapoor siblings, that is, Sonam, Rhea and Harshvardhan Kapoor came together on the couch. The trio’s equation has always garnered attention and one of the reasons for it are the contrasting personalities of these siblings, especially, Harsh and his sisters Sonam K Ahuja and Rhea Kapoor. Obviously, family dynamics were a part of the discussions and then they had Karan Johar hosting it who has been quite close to the family. In fact, the producer – host started off the introduction by saying how Anil Kapoor was his first friend from the fraternity! And from there on, there was a small intro of all the three siblings who proceeded to the couch hand in hand. While the emotional part of the message showcased how proud this father was of his children, the other half had some interesting revelations. The trailers of Manmohan Singh bio-pic The Accidental Prime Minister and the Bal Thackeray bio-pic Thackeray were released with 24 hours of one another. Two of India’s finest actors play the two easy-to-imitate-hard-to-grasp politicians, who in their own way, one aggressive the other muted, changed the course of Indian politics, Nawazuddin Siddiqui is impressive as Thackeray, as he doesn’t try to assume the original’s physical traits such as the speech pattern and the smirk when confronted with humbug. Thackeray was an enigma because he seemed too open-natured for a politician. Nawaz nails the politician’s character traits without trying to “be” Thackeray. Anupam Kher, on the other hand, plays Manmohan Singh like a true actor, applying his transformational abilities to get the physicality right. In a recent interview to me Anupam while speaking about his transformation said, “It is easy to play a personality who is someone long gone, no matter how distinguished. With due respects to Ben Kingsley who was simply outstanding, he played Mahatma Gandhi long after when the original character’s physicality was a hazy memory on blurred bank notes and vague documentaries. On the other hand I had to play someone who is very much in the public domain. Manmohan Singhji‘s walk, his personality, his style of speaking are all in the public consciousness. I couldn’t afford to slip up. I’ve given it my entire concentration. We have worked hard to make a big epic homage to a man, scholar and politician who is misunderstood, or rather hardly understood.” Anupam’s approach to the role is one that of many accomplished actors: he thinks getting the externalities of the real –life character would instinctively give him access to the character’s inner life. This method of playing real-life characters is not fool proof .It worked for Ben Kingsley’s Gandhi. Here playing Manmohan Singh imitating that tinny voice is a fatal mistake. It makes the performance look like mimicry verging on mockery. Nawaz on the other hand, seems to have got a grip over the inner life of Balasaheb Thackeray. He told me recently, “To become like him I had to first think like him. Be it Saddat Hassan Manto or Balasaheb Thackeray I don’t think the physical resemblance is that important.” Nawaz doesn’t play Thackeray. He plays along. These are perceptions based on the two trailers. I could be wrong. Anupam Kher is too experienced and accomplished an actor to trip up such an important opportunity. But then again some of the finest artistes on the world go wrong. And nothing wrong in that. Aankhen (Director: David Dhawan): After the 1992 hits Shola Aur Shabnam and Bol Radha Bol, what cemented both David Dhawan’s filmmaking identity and clout was this mad crime caper. Govinda, Kader Khan and Raj Babbar—all played dual roles in this entertainer that achieved the status of a blockbuster—in the entire 1990s, Aankhen ranks next only to Hum Aapke Hain Koun!... and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in quantum of success. It also showcased the synergistic rapport between David and Govinda that was to result in many more films, most of them hits, and his classic brand of comedy that survives (with tweaks as per the times) even now in his latest films with son Varun Dhawan—Main Tera Hero and Judwaa 2. Baazigar (Director: Abbas-Mustan): Again, in 1992, leading music label Venus Records and Tapes as producers and directors Abbas-Mustan had made a mark with Khiladi, Shah Rukh Khan had begun his career with Deewaan, followed by two more successes in Chamatkar and Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman and Kajol was noticed as a promising debutant in the dud Bekhudi. But it took this crime drama to connect all of them to lasting commercial big time. More, the SRK-Kajol pair took off in a big way, and in the next eight years, went on to star in four more blockbusters. As a bonus, Shilpa Shetty made a lustrous debut and is relevant even today in other ways, while Vinod Rathod hit ephemeral big-time as a singer. Above all, Anu Malik consolidated his comeback (post-Sir and the telefilm Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Ayee) after a terrible lull in his career, and ruled for the next 13 years as undisputed Numero Uno. For the record, it metaphorically signaled the end of the brief reign of Nadeem-Shravan, who actually turned down the film! Darr (Director:Yash Chopra): This was Yash Chopra’s last super-hit as a director, and significantly, it began his enduring association with Shah Rukh Khan, who stepped into Aamir Khan’s shoes. After Raju…, listed above, it gave rise to the popular pairing of then-good friends Shah Rukh and Juhi Chawla, who were to even partner in three productions—Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, Asoka—The Great and Chalte Chalte between 1999 and 2003. This was also Shah Rukh’s second consecutive villainous role, this time minus any justification for the character. And the superstar surviving possible typecasting and ruling as a romantic icon for over two decades was probably the first signal that a new age was coming—where no actor (or actress) would be slotted in categories like hero, supporting actor, comic actor or villain! Hum Hain Raahi Pyaar Ke (Director: Mahesh Bhatt): This Aamir Khan-Juhi Chawla film actually was the last clean hit that Bhatt directed (though Sir and Gumrah also did well among his six (!!) directorials this year). The grapevine has it that a lot of work in that department was supervised by the hero himself, as it was his home production. For the record, it was also the debut film of a child star named Kunal Khemu! Khal-Nayak (Director: Subhash Ghai): The film that consolidated Sanjay Dutt’s starry status ironically came in the same year when he was first arrested for alleged subversive activities. Ramya Krishnan was first noticed with this super-hit despite her steamy songs earlier in the 1988 Dayavan and this year’s Parampara. But above all, the film will go down in history as the year of (what one source said) one of the three greatest chartbusters of all-time in Hindi cinema— ‘Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai’ sung by Alka Yagnik and Ila Arun. It topped all the countdowns that year—the Cibaca (Binaca) Geet Mala on radio and the Philips Top Ten, Superhit Muqabla and BPL Oye on television. Roja (Director: Mani Ratnam): Roja rewrote history. The dubbed film, for a while, made Mani Ratnam and dubbed South films big entities in the 1990s. Mani thus became the second of four South stalwarts (after Singeetham Srinivasa Rao and before Shankar and S.S. Rajamouli) who became big names across the country. A name associated with Hindi cinema for eons (that is, since 1976!) for the first time became a saleable entity—singer Hariharan! In a first again, the music of the dubbed film became a trendsetter in content and sound. It was the beginning of the A.R. Rahman era as he blazed into Hindi film music like a storm. Music and lyrics were never to be the same again. But there was an alarming flipside: the double-entendre wave also took off with ‘Rukmani Rukmani’ (sung by Baba Sehgal and Shweta Shetty)—and Khal-Nayak’s ‘Choli Ke Peeche’ and Dalaal’s ‘Gutar Gutam’ added to the passing epidemic. 1993 was also noted for some other significant arrivals: Saif Ali Khan made his debut in Paramparai, also getting his first solo lead film and success in Aashik Aawara. But it was in music that, apart from the double-meaning wave, far-reaching changes were first seen. Rapper Bali Brahmbhatt, like Ila Arun, Shweta Shetty and Baba Sehgal, had his first brush with fame with ‘Lena Hai Lena Hai´ from Bomb Blast—and Rap also came in as a trend. With the entry of MTV and Channel [V] into India, a paradigm transition came in on how music was now going to be not just an audio experience but a audio-visual one. The on-screen presentation of film songs slowly begin to change as well to a more Westernized concept. The era of ‘track’ recordings had also come in, with its own far-reaching effects on Hindi film music’s lyrical, vocal, musical and orchestral content as well as the fortunes of all the leading song recording studios. And last but certainly not the least, the new TV promos for films, songs and albums as well as the countdowns began the dubious phase of playing down weightier, more enduring songs in many film albums to “promote” the more populist ones. #2018Recap: 10 Best films of the year #2018Recap: 10 Best films of the year What a year it has been for Hindi cinema! The hits and the critically acclaimed films kept rolling out. At the last count 10 films of the year had jumped into the 100-crore league. Not all of them deserved their success. Subhash K Jha picks his favourite films of the year. 1. Badhaai Ho: An absolute charmer, a delightful exploration of the suburban middleclass and its sexual-emotional anxieties as the matriarch of the family announces her pregnancy. All hell breaks loose. Sophomore director Amit Sharma eschews melodrama and hysteria. The reined-in screenplay gives the characters breathing (and breeding) space. The narrative never breathes down the characters’ neck, allows them to just be. Never before have the people populating a movie-made housing colony seemed so real. The performances were so vivid and endearing I had to go back to them. And to think the director Amit Sharma had earlier directed the potboiler Tevar, best remembered for putting the redoubtable Manoj Bajpai on screen in his innerwear to endorse a particular brand of lingerie. Yuck. 2. October: Shoojit Sircar’s delicately-drawn love story about an annoyingly self-important hotel concierge (Varun Dhawan) and his soft-spoken colleague (newcomer Banita Sandhu) who slips and falls into a coma. Did she give him a hint of her feelings for him before she lost consciousness? This was an audacious and daring premise for a love story. But then when has Sircar ever played the game by the rules? He breaks them with tender care and gives us a romance as wispy and gossamer as Shakti Samanta’s all-time classic Amar Prem, without R D Burman’s timeless songs. This is the problem with romantic films today. The soul may have music. But the music hardly ever has soul. When Varun Dhawan was deeply effective when he was not busy showing us how daring an actor he is. 3. Padmaavat: Despite a fatally flawed script, this epic—yes the only film this year that qualified as one—sailed across to greatness on the strength of its visual resplendence and the power of its director the great Sanjay Leela Bhansali to bring glory to large-screen grandiosity. Bhansali for my money is the best filmmaker in our country today. Every in Padmaavat spoke to us in a language of spectacular resplendence. On a second viewing the performances except Jim Sarbh left me unmoved. I’d have liked to see more of the love story between Ranveer Singh’s Allauddin Khilji and Sarbh’s transgender character Malik Kafur. 4. Lust Stories: This 4-storey treat on Netflix has so much to give, it requires, no demands, repeat viewing. The theme is lust. This orgasmic omnibus opens with the weakest story of the lot. Anurag Kashyap’s ploughs through the sexual escapades of one of the most unlikable female heroines I’ve seen in recent times. Radhika Apte plays the sexually active Kalindi, a college lecturer with the hots for her virgin student Akash Thosar who remains virgin no more after she finishes with him. Zoya Akhtar’s story sees Bhumi Pedneker blossom into an actress of substance. Playing a house-help who is helping her unmarried single employer (Neil Bhoopalan) with his bucket-‘lust’ Bhumi hardly speaks. Zoya tracks her unspoken movement through the apartment which she knows intimately but can never own, as her employer-lover’s prospective bride descends on the ‘1 BKH’ apartment with her folks, reminding her of her place in the domestic hierarchy. There is a kind of unvarnished elegance in Zoya’s delineation of domesticity .In the third story Dibakar Bannerjee does an Ingmar Bergman-Basu Bhattacharya portrait-from-a-fractured-marriage in the third story where lust is not a predominant impulse. Desolation is. And who better equipped than Manisha Koirala to project the hurt and wounded pride of a wife who has found comfort in her husband’s best friend’s arms? Bannerjee uses a lot of words to heal wounds in the fractured relationship. Dibakar builds a bewildering wall around the triangular relationship. I found the fourth story in this Lust-omnibus to be the hardest to define. Clearly Karan Johar enjoys the orgasmic beat much more than the other three directors. His story is an unabashed ode to the Big O, though a little broad and tactless in the way it makes the self-pleasuring vibrator seem like a tool of sexual liberation. Sending the warrior queen to the battle field with a sword….It is really not that simple Still, full credit to Karan Johar and all the other three directors of Lust Stories for opening that door into the Indian middleclass’ sexual consciousness where there lurks a lust for self-fulfilment , seldom explored, scarcely realized. For exploring what goes on behind those doors of middleclass bedrooms this omnibus deserves an ovation. 5. Padman: R Balki’s heartfelt propaganda film on female hygiene is to menstruation what Toilet Ek Prem Katha was to defecation. There is the period film. And then there is the film about the periods. Excellence comes in many packages. But rarely in a small secret package wrapped a newspaper. Sometimes these packages cost Rs 55 and are completely out of reach for the non-urban women of India. One man in Tamil Nadu, who is miraculously a convincingly-transformed North Indian in Pad Man, decided to do something about making sanitary pads affordable to poor women. Balki adopts a simple straightforward linear narrative mode, leaving behind the swag and swagger of Chini Kum, Ki & Ka and the underrated Shamitabh to focus on the man and his mission with a singlemindedness of vision shared in equal measures by the protagonist and the filmmaker. There are passages of keen satire rubbing shoulders with fleeting images of deep contemplation in the supple sturdy and rugged storytelling, all merging in a marriage of Pure Cinema and Social Statement. 6. Soorma: At a time when supposedly responsible filmmakers are glorifying gangsters, terrorists and sociopaths in ostensible bio-pics, Soorma about the struggles of hockey champ Sandeep Singh to overcome crippling obstacles to claim a name among sports legends, comes as a gust of unpolluted air. This is a film that needed to be made, a story about a man whom future generations need to know about and look up to. Damn, the young need role models from our everyday life not imported super-heroes who can’t save their own egos even as they purport to save civilization from destruction. Diljit Dosanjh makes the character and his struggles look so artless and credible you want to reach into the innards of the plot and hold the protagonist’s hand and tell him, ‘It’s okay. You will be fine. I’ve suffered too.’ In a sequence like the one where Diljit pleads and rages over the phone against his beloved’s seeming betrayal. Dilijit’s gentle control over the swelling emotions is laudatory. If this performance doesn’t fetch Dosanjh a National award, what will? 7. Sui Dhaga: After I saw Sharat Kataria's debut film Dum Lagake Haisha I hoped Kataria won't sell out to the star system .But his second film starred a market -friendly lead star .I hoped Kataria's second film won't lose the charm and innocence of the first. Providentially Sui Dhaga lost none of the delicacy and sting of a tale rooted to the soil, even while providing space to its leads to surrender to their characters .Varun Dhawan surrenders to his character Mauji as though the role was tailor-made for him .Never afraid to look less than heroic on screen, Varun furnishes his darji's characters with a rugged candour. This is an actor and a character who are so sincere to their craft they don't mind crawling on the floor if that's what it takes to stay afloat. Dhawan's performance is filled with a smothered disappointment .it takes his quietly confident deceptively docile wife Mamta to bring out the suppressed ambition in her husband. The aspirational narrative of how Mauji finds his groove with considerable help from his street-wise wife ,works like a charm because all the performers are solidly sincere. But most of all Sui Dhaga wins our hearts because the director never milks the milieu for soppy sentimentality. Nor does he swing the other way to make the middle-class ambience a place to celebrate misery. The tone is constantly energetic yet poised. Kataria is neither awed by stillness nor intimidated by noise. He listens to the heartbeat of the Indian heartland. We listen. 8. Raazi: Though I had several misgivings about the plot which bends backwards to show the traditional enemy as empathetic, this film is finally a brave and sensitive attempt to portray the life of an Indian spy in Pakistan. Raazi is that triumphant film which leaves you with some serious misgivings. The story, as we all know by now, is based on the real events during the eve of the 1971 Indo-Pak war when a valorous young Muslim Indian girl Sehmat decided to cross the border to become wife in a Pakistani family of armymen to gather information for the Indian government. It is an audacious tale. And one waiting to be filmed. As a work of cinematic art Raazi scores very highly, almost rivalling the director Meghna Gulzar’s previous film Talvar. Alia Bhatt lets her performance merge into Sehmat’s moral dilemma. We often see her break down in private. But her grief earns no sympathy from us. Her imagined moral high-ground is not only patronizing to the people whom she betrays it is also unconvincing to us who watch in horrified silence as she murders and double-deals with a defiant impunity. 9. Mulk: It is very hard to believe that Sinha whose earlier credits include fluff stuff like Tum Bin and Ra.One, has actually created this modern political masterpiece which attempts very successfully to humanize a community that has been demonized by some negative elements. And yet Mulk doesn’t take sides, doesn’t make the Indian Muslim community a portrait of injured innocence. What it does do—and full-marks to Anubhav Sinha for writing a script that doesn’t bend backwards to humanize the community under siege—is to lay bare the layers of deception that mars a truly fruitful dialogue between sane rational elements in both the Hindu and Muslim community. When the son (Prateik Babbar) from a Muslim family in the dense by lanes of Varanasi decides to became a so-called jihadi, the ramifications on his family are deep and wounding. It is in portraying the family’s anguish that Anubhav emerges with cinema that’s masterly and timely. There comes a time in the taut narrative when the patriarch of the family is asked to choose between home and safety. Rishi Kapoor making that resolute choice reminded me of Balraj Sahni in Garam Hawa. 10. AndhaDhun: Everything and nothing makes sense in the morally unhinged world of Sriram Raghavan. People kill maim hoodwink and betray the unsuspecting at the drop of a hat. This intricately woven whodunit’s hero is a blind pianist, played with eclectic aplomb by Ayushmann Khurrana. We soon get to know the blind pianist is not blind after all. Though mercifully he remains a pianist right until the bitter battered finale when nemesis is no longer willing to stay huddled in a corner. told with a verve and velocity that the suspense genre has never experienced before in Hindi cinema. So if you’ve been wondering why suspense films in Indian cinema seem so amateurish think no more. Andhadhun is everything that a murder mystery should be. Filled with morally reprehensible characters including an absolutely debauched cop (Manav Vij, dazzlingly slimy) it doesn’t try to impress us with the right moral values. God is on leave. On the “anti-nepotistic” front, so to speak, we also saw Delhi girl Banita Sandhu in October, opposite Varun Dhawan, Jassie Gill from Punjabi cinema in Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi, and television stars Mouni Roy opposite Akshay Kumar in Gold and Radhika Madan in Patakhaa. Mrunal Thakur also made a mark in the crossover Love Sonia, though she will start out in a proper Hindi film only in 2019 with Super 30 opposite Hrithik Roshan. So what defines what Kangana Ranaut defines as “nepotism” in Hindi films? And does it work sans talent and sans luck in today’s scenario? Here is a check. Nepotism and the first break First and foremost, a film lineage can mean a big break in a home production, with a role written to show how good you are at songs and dances, action, comedy, and emotions, a la Hrithik Roshan in Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai. In this respect, however, this year we had only LoveYatri and Genius, and neither of them was a perceived success. Aayush has not gone on a signing spree. The industry as a whole also supports other insiders, and so Ishaan, Janhvi, Rohan and Sara got major banners and makers to give them big breaks. But while Neha Sharma is no star in the commercial sense, Aisha, even if it was a teeny-weeny role, got to romance a big hero like John Abraham in a T-Series co-production. So is this, at all, a case of nepotism? And vis-à-vis them all, how did the completely fresh faces (read outsiders) fare? Warina Hussain (a true-blue outsider as she hails from Afghanistan!) was chosen as Aayush’s heroine in LoveYatri and frankly, held her own in the film. Mouni Roy was Akshay Kumar’s wife in Gold, a film foolproof in concept as a success. Banita Sandhu won the attention of one of our most respected directors, Shoojit Sircar, and got GenY’s favourite Varun Dhawan as her hero, but had little to do in it. Radhika Madan, another television favourite, was cast as one of the two warring sisters in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Pataakha. She scored, but the film was a dud. Note, however, that there was no hero from outside who really got a big break this year: any hopes of a future Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar and John Abraham or even a Sidharth Malhotra, Ayushmann Khurrana or Sushant Singh Rajput were stonewalled in 2018. So is it nepotism to the fore again as, conventionally, more money is invested in a new hero vis-à-vis a new heroine? After all, even the last three names were ‘green-backed’ then by biggies Karan Johar, John Abraham (after he became one!) and UTV! The second chance It is widely believed that talents from film families are given at least one more follow-up chance if their debut films do not work. But is that really true? Here again, Salman Khan is set to re-launch Aayush, this time, in an action drama. However, among the boys, no one else, as yet, has been so lucky, though Utkarsh has the best chance here if his father Anil Sharma, known for biggies like Shraddhanjali, Hukumat, Gadar—Ek Prem Katha and Apne over the years, designs another vehicle for him. Of course, Karan Johar has taken Janhvi, like with most previous protégés, under his wings. She is a part of the ensemble cast of his mammoth directorial Takht, and before that, she will play Gunjan Saxena, IAF pilot in the Kargil War, in another production. But as of now, Ishaan Khattar, a terrific actor but not really a conventional star package, is languishing sans work, while Sara Ali Khan is “considering offers”, the announcements, we presume, will be made only after Simmba releases. Sara takes her success positively, as an indicator that she has to work at not letting down her audience each time, and the other family-iar faces admit that connections of kith and kin can only offer a platform or two. But as Kangana Ranaut perceives it, if the platform is as big as Karan Johar, how can rank newcomers from outside match up? Yet, in the matter of more chances, it is outsider Mouni who now seems to scores highest. This TV actor of standing now does Romeo Akbar Walter opposite John Abraham, Made In China with Rajkummar Rao and (as an antagonist, a la Kangana Ranaut in Krrish 3) Brahmastra with Ranbir Kapoor. The argument can be that outside girls can be given more films because there is no money exactly riding on them. But, as we have seen, money is not exactly being pumped in on all the family-based names either! The show will go on… 2019, as of now, will not be different at all. Heading the list of new family-based heroes will be Meezan Jafferi, son of Jaaved Jafferi and thus comedian Jagdeep’s grandson. He will romance Sharmin Segal, daughter to Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s sister, editor Bela Segal, in a Bhansali production. Anmol Thakeria (producer Ashok Thakeria’s and Poonam Dhillon’s son) and Miss India International 2014 Jhataleka Malhotra star in another Bhansali production called Tuesdays And Fridays. Katrina Kaif’s sister Isabelle Kaif stars in Time To Dance opposite the one-film-old Sooraj Pancholi getting his second chance after the dud debut Hero. Both these films are co-produced by T-Series. The third hero to come in from the film lineage will be Suniel Shetty’s son Ahan Shetty, who makes his debut in a Sajid Nadiadwala action film. A fourth name, if the film makes it to the finishing line, will be Dharmendra’s grandson Karan Deol directed by dad Sunny Deol in Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas. And among the girls, Karan Johar introduces Chunky Pandey’s daughter Ananya ‘PandAy’ in Student Of The Year 2, along with outsider newbie Tara Sutaria. And Alaia F. (Yes, this will be her screen name!) will co-star as Saif Ali Khan’s daughter in his co-production Jawani Jaaneman—her full name is Alaia Furniturewala and she is Kabir Bedi’s granddaughter and Pooja Bedi’s kid. Final analysis Acting skills, in the final analysis, are as much about genetics as luck is about talent! But hopefully, with multiple platforms opening up for actors, they will get to shine irrespective of whether they have film connections or not. In an interview, she put forth her honest opinion about the Kashmir conflict and what she and her family are going through it. Now, not many know about Fatima’s connection with the valley but her father happens to be a Hindu from Jammu and her mom is a Muslim from Kashmir. She has been brought up in a very democratic set up and therefore has very clear ideas about religion and the politics associated with it. When asked about the Kashmir conflict she said, “It's very sad. The civilians are getting hurt and dying. Because of these clashes, the people who live there, their quality of life is affected. It is very sad because nobody should live in fear. I think it is only fair that when you wake up in the morning, you wake up with only positivity and not in fear. So, I really hope and pray the conditions in Kashmir changes.” She even spoke about her personal experience dealing with the tough situation there since her maternal family still reside there. She said, “My whole family stays there. My mother's whole family still lives there. I have seen my mother being worried. Mere mama ke ghar ke upar kuch aisa pata nahi bomb vomb gir gaya tha. You know, you are in constant fear. My mother is living in Mumbai and you see her crying and getting affected. Bollywood Hungama, in this special feature, collates a list of 18 such scenes and one-liners in Hindi films in 2018 that we felt were highly embarrassing. 1. Hate Story IV Milap Zaveri writes some sharp and massy dialogues but with Hate Story IV, he went completely overboard. The atrocious one-liners made a lot of viewers squirm in their seats. There are many such dialogues but the one in the beginning took the cake for us. In this scene, Aryan (Vivan Bhatena) and his girlfriend cum business partner Rishma (Ihana Dhillon) are having a romantic moment by the pool. Rishma remarks that Aryan loves water. Aryan is surprised and asks her to explain her stand. She replies that since her body consists of 65% water and that he loves her body, so this means that he loves water as well! We expected Aryan to break off with Rishma right there but instead he got impressed with this analogy and added that he loves her 100% and not just 65%! See it to believe it! 2. Nanu Ki Jaanu This horror comedy started off well and the presence of Abhay Deol made us feel that it’ll be a good piece of cinema. Sadly, all our hopes went downhill rapidly in the second half. And this particular scene was a big reason for that. The sight of the deceased, Siddhi (Patralekhaa), consoling her father (Rajesh Sharma) from the kitchen chimney while in her ghost avatar sent ripples of laughter throughout the cinema hall. And this was supposed to be an emotional moment! 3. Bhavesh Joshi Superhero The film that is hailed by a section of netizens and critics is severely flawed and silly. Harshvardhan Kapoor’s (lack of) acting further hampered the impact. In one scene, Harshvardhan meets a karate instructor and tells him to teach him the moves so that he can take revenge from the baddies. When the karate master refuses, Harshvardhan shouts at him and says ‘Sikhao’! It’s shocking that someone like Vikramaditya Motwane penned such a scene and even retained it in the final cut. 4. Race 3 Few years ago, I was watching a Hollywood film with a dual-audio print. At one point, I mistakenly changed the audio from English to Hindi and I didn’t even realize that I have done so. And I was shocked to see the change in language, cursing my friend, for giving such a flawed file. I was reminded of this foolish and amusing incident while watching Race 3. Suddenly, the characters in the film began to speak in Bhojpuri for almost 10-12 minutes for no reason at all. For the first 2-3 minutes, it was fun but later, it began to hurt the ears. 5. Race 3 We can’t help but feature this film again. Prior to the release, Daisy Shah’s ‘None of my business’ dialogue went viral. Also, it achieved the status of so-bad-that-it-is-so-good status. So we let that pass. After all, Daisy has mouthed too many absolute gems. All can’t be featured here but we’ll point out at the most cringe-worthy one. Daisy Shah simply wanted to imply that Saqib Saleem should show Bobby Deol the video in his laptop, as part of their plan to poison the latter against Salman Khan. Instead of saying it the way it should be, our girl says ‘Isse dil nahi, Dell (laptop brand) khol ke dikhao’! This bit surely helped in product placement but word of mouth got heavily affected in the bargain. 6. Fanney Khan The last 20-25 minutes of the film was entirely embarrassing. This was a remake of a Danish film, Everybody’s Famous, and it was a black comedy. Fanney Khan makers made the film quite serious and melodramatic and lost the plot. Hence, all the scenes of Fanney Khan (Anil Kapoor) being surrounded by cops and media and threatening to kill Baby Singh (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) if her daughter (Pihu Sand) is not allowed to sing were unbearable. 7. Genius The launch of the star kid Utkarsh Sharma by papa Anil, Genius was riddled with some horrendous dialogues and scenes. This one stood out in terms of cringe-worthy VFX and forced patriotism. Vasudev Shastri (Utkarsh) has been injured in his leg but that doesn’t stop from stealing a bicycle and running behind a minister’s convoy. When he realizes he’s out of reach, he takes a shortcut by sliding sideways on his bike on a railing, all shown horribly! Finally, he approaches the minister’s car and that’s when his agenda is revealed – he didn’t want to talk to the neta or do anything to him. He simply wanted to restore the flag on the windshield that was placed upside down! The onlookers out there had ran for their lives with his sliding stunt and we were hoping that keeping in mind the ‘trend’ nowadays, the genius boy would be lynched. Instead, they applauded him for his ‘noble deed’! 8. Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se This so-called comic caper was anything but funny. Bobby Deol hammed but more than it was Dharmendra who put up an embarrassing act. He struggles to do a good job and is let down by age and the poor script. On top of that, he’s shown to be a Casanova and whose charm is such that apsaras from heaven like to roam and serenade around him. 9. Laila Majnu The beginning portion of this love story is an embarrassment of sorts. Laila (Tripti Dimri) is shown to be a flirt, which is fine. But the kind of behaviour she indulges in is questionable. Her intro song ‘Gayee Kaam Se’ shows Laila teasing guys by throwing her lipstick-stained tissue towards them and encouraging them to follow her car. Later, a guy unashamedly clicks her pictures without her consent and she appears all coy and shy. If this is how the makers wanted to show Laila as ‘cool’, it backfired miserably. 10. Manmarziyaan It was a fine effort no doubt and performances were exemplary. However, the film went off track in the second half while showing the dynamics between Rumi (Taapsee Pannu), her hubby Robbie (Abhishek Bachchan) and her former flame Vicky (Vicky Kaushal). Robbie knew all along that he has had an arranged marriage with Rumi and that she still loves Vicky. Rumi, meanwhile, continues to love Vicky and even sleeps with him post marriage and when Robbie finds out, he gets all shocked, as if he was in the dark about all this! A sequence that left us as stumped as Robbie, in short! 11. Batti Gul Meter Chalu The film had some sharp and acidic dialogues. But the impact was ruined by the excessive use of terms like ‘thehra’ and ‘bal’. Notwithstanding the fact that people in Tehri, where the film is based, rarely use such terms in their day-to-day conversations, it frustrated viewers in the first 10-15 minutes. After a point, we used to dread as soon as any character were to open their mouth, lest they’ll utter ‘thehra’ or ‘bal’ and further add to the agony of the viewers! 12. Jalebi This was a 104-minute of pure snoozefest. It let viewers down in the first ten minutes itself with some terrible dialogues and scenes. Sample this: Anu (Digangana Suryavanshi) breaks the ice with Ayesha (Rhea Chakraborty) by remarking, “Wow. Aapka naam bhi ‘A’ se chalu ho raha hai and mera bhi…what a coincidence’! It’s shocked to see such lazy writings from the Bhatts! 13. Helicopter Eela We expected this to be a sweet mother-son tale but it turned out to be a flick with no head or tail when it comes to logic. The film lost its viewers in the first 30-40 minutes itself. We all knew Eela (Kajol) is a single mother and when the film goes on a flashback mode and shows her dating Arun (Tota Roy Choudhury), you kind of expect the film to go on a predictable zone. That is, one pre-empts that Arun would die early or dump her for another woman. However, what happened was something that nobody in the world could guess. Arun does leave Eela but because he suddenly realizes that men in his family die before the age of 40 and he too can die. Instead of dying with his loved ones, he decides to desert them! Viewers in my show couldn’t believe their eyes and ears during this said sequence. 14. Namaste England The predecessor, Namastey London, was a feel-good entertainer. But this one was a torture from the word ‘Go’ and became more and more unbearable as it reached the finale. The film’s plot is also bizarre – Jasmeet (Parineeti Chopra), already married to Param (Arjun Kapoor), marries Sam (Aditya Seal) in London. It’s a part of a plan to get citizenship for UK. Jasmeet hides about her marital status to Sam and later in a very serious scene, when she tells him the truth; Sam tells that he already had a doubt. We thought he must have seen her marriage certificate or eavesdropped when she was talking to Param. Instead, he blurts out that he knew she’s married since she didn’t fall for his charms! We almost killed ourselves at this point 15. Thugs Of Hindostan This big-budget action film failed as it was outright silly and badly directed. The intermission point, in our books, took the cake in terms of logic and absurdity. The rebel warrior Khudabaksh (Amitabh Bachchan), who instantly bumps off treacherous people, has found out that Firangi Malla (Aamir Khan) has betrayed him. Firangi is unapologetic and even says ‘dhokha swabhaav hai mera’. Yet, Khudabakash entrusts him the responsibility of saving princess Zafira (Fatima Sana Shaikh) and then gives up his own life (he didn’t but that’s what it seemed like at that point)! Vijay Krishna Acharya’s haphazard execution further messed up the sequence. 16. Mohalla Assi The long-delayed and controversial film of Sunny Deol finally saw the light of the day this year. A crucial track of the film is a group of men and intellectuals gathering at a tea shop and talking about various issues plaguing Banaras and the country. It makes no contribution to the principle plot and yet, almost 30% of the film is devoted to them. The way they debate and fight and get angry on each other tests the patience of the viewers after a point. 17. Bhaiaji Superhit A week after Mohalla Assi came Bhaiaji Superhit, also starring Sunny Deol. The actor is known for his action but here, it was mind-blowing…literally! In the finale, Sapna (Preity Zinta) is unconscious after almost drowning in a pond. Bhaiaji (Sunny) is trying to revive her but is unsuccessful. This is when a part of the car comes flying, hits Sapna at the back of her head and thus she throws up water in her lungs and is miraculously revived! 18. Zero This film became more and crazier as it progressed. The climax, featuring Bauua Singh (Shah Rukh Khan) going to Mars and returning after 15 years (no details given as to how he survived) was unbelievable to say the least! Vicky said, “This was the first time in my life that I got to meet the family members of the Bravehearts, who laid down their lives in the line of duty. I didn’t know what to say to them; all I could do was just hold their hands and bow my head in gratitude and respect. A child from one of the families, who had lost his elder brother in the Uri attack, when asked what he wants to become when he grows up replied, ‘Fauji’. I salute the spirit of not just our armed forces but also of their brave families.” The film Uri showcases the operation initiated by the Indian Army in retaliation to the terrorist attack in Uri, during which 19 Indian soldiers were killed. We are just happy he gets a chance to look lovingly at his wife at an age when he should not be thinking of the birds and the bees. In a film teeming with assured performance, Rao stood tall. Later bloomer. But what a bloom! 2. Jim Sarbh in Padmaavat While the plot’s focus was almost entirely on Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, the unorthodox Jim Sarbh as Alauddin Khilji’s vicious ruthless transgender man Friday - loverboy blew the screen apart with his whiny sadism. It was the first time that mainstream Hindi cinema dared to show the true carnal passion that a man felt for another man. In that sense, this was a pathbreaking performance. 3. Arunodoy Singh in Blackmail As Divya Dutta’s absurdly henpecked husband Arunodoy displayed a new side to his personality. He was like a petrified oversized tomcat afraid to face his nemesis after repeatedly devouring on forbidden bowls of full cream milk. Here was a performance that wasn’t afraid to let it all hang out even if it made him look extravagantly idiotic. 4. Ashutosh Rana in Mulk The ensemble cast in this dark tale of Islamic isolation shone brightly. None brighter than the irrepressible Rana who bit and chew into his role of the fundamentalist Hindu lawyer who spat venom at the Muslim community, branding their children terrorists, etc, with such casual straightforwardness. Rana made the absurd sound chillingly authentic. That rhetorical tone of voice and the smirk…I couldn’t sleep for days. 5. Aparshakti Khurrana in Stree Of course, Rajkummar Rao as the naïve tailor stole the show. But Aparshakti as his incredulous best friend was a howl and a hoot. In fact, Hindi cinema has a history of brilliant actors stealing the show as the hero’s best friend. I only hope Aparshakti doesn’t get typecast as the sidekick. He is much more than Rajendranath to Rajendra Kumar. 6. Girish Kulkarni in Fanney Khan Some will remember him as the mean wrestling coach in Dangal. More recently he was brilliant in a cameo in Sacred Games. This chameleon-like Marathi actor was superlative as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s slimy music manager in Fanney Khan. Not missing a single heartbeat in the character’s opportunism, Kulkarni once again showed us that good actors in Bollywood are like potatoes in a fancy vegetable dish. We take them for granted. 7. Arif Zakaria in Raazi As the Pakistani family ’s loyal Man-Friday who sees through the new Bahu ’s hidden agenda, Arif Zakaria brought a glorious gravitas and snide wisdom to his role. But dancing with Ranveer Singh as Neha Kakkar does my playback is also my dream come true.” She is well-adjusted to the shifting dynamics of commercial Hindi cinema. “It’s okay if I am not there in Simmba as much as I was in Kedarnath. It’s okay if I don’t have that big role. Being a part of a Rohit Shetty film is as much a high for me as being a central character in Kedarnath. When I signed Simmba, I was very aware of my role. One needs to know why one is doing what one is doing. I did Simmba with my eyes open. I am thrilled to be part of it. I aspire to do all genres of cinema.” Displaying wisdom far beyond her years, Sara says, “An actor does every film in the hope of success and in the hope of learning something new. I’ve learnt a lot from working in both Kedarnath and Simmba.” What would your third film be? “Something that challenges and excites me. Right now, I am promoting Kedarnath and Simmba. The lead star Ranveer Singh is pretty confident that this will be the film which will perfectly end the year with a bang! Ahead of its release, Rohit gave an interview to Bollywood Hungama and answered a pertinant question: Whether he will ever work with Shah Rukh Khan again? Rohit said that there were no apprehensions working with Shah Rukh Khan because the failure of Dilwale was a sheer bad luck. He said, “I have made Zameen which didn't do well. I have made Sunday which did an average business. Maybe in coming years there will be more two three films like Dilwale. Who knows? Ups and downs will happen but I don't get carried away with my success nor do I get scared with my failures.” Speaking particularly about Dilwale he said, “it's sheer bad luck that the film did not release everywhere and maybe somewhere we went wrong. That happened two years and we have left it. I don't want to talk about it anymore.” He said it's just a bad dream which he has forgotten now. On being asked if he would work with Shah Rukh Khan again he said, “ I don't know, right now it's not happening. For two or three years I don't see it happening, the way I have planned my stuff but let's see.” But despite that he added that since he works round the clock, he does not know what will come up when so he might work with Shah Rukh Khan sooner.
